holiday-lightsHoliday Decor: Spend Less & Enjoy More

Have you noticed that retailers start displaying their holiday decorations and merchandise earlier and earlier each year?

Some people welcome the early holiday cheer, while others like myself; feel there is too much Christmas to soon. A scientific poll of 1,000 American adults, 73 percent agree with the statement that “it is annoying that the holiday shopping season has gotten earlier.” Forty-eight percent strongly agree. Just 21 percent disagreed. But, if you are a gung ho ho ho shopper and into the themed holiday decorating then this time of year is definitely your best bet for great deals on all things “holiday”.

holiday-ornamentsWhat To Buy and When

Remember when the best deals came after the holiday? Obviously this is still true for items like Christmas cards and holiday wrapping paper. But now, retailers are introducing their holiday discounts early to ensure their stock is sold out by Christmas and, you don’t have to wait and purchase after the holidays only to pack them away for the next 11 months before you can use them.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

The holiday season with its purchasing, wrapping and celebrating substantially increases the amount of waste we generate. However, there are many opportunities for the consumer to reduce, reuse and recycle their remnants of holiday cheer.

wood-deck-maintenanceOutdoor Deck Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

By Anne Del Rio

The outdoor deck is vulnerable to the elements of nature. For this reason, it needs frequent upkeep.

Here are some tips that can help you maintain your porch.

Sweep the floor thoroughly. Remove the fragments wedged between wooden planks with a putty tool. This special knife has a wide and flat blade made of metal for scraping and applying cement.

deck-cleanerMold can cause the deck to deteriorate quickly. Wash on a regular basis. Use the right cleanser. The typical deck cleaner is appropriate for wood. Just make sure to follow manufacturer’s guidelines. A specific formula is needed if your deck is made of composite material. Standard de-greasing substances can eliminate oil stains. The vinyl deck can be cleaned easily using mild soap and warm water.

The best time to wash your deck us when the day is cool. Sunlight can dissolve cleansing chemicals. Thus, avoid cleaning during hot days. For wooden verandas, apply the cleaner using a brush with stiff bristles, paint roller or garden spray device. Scrub the flooring before the deck dries up. Douse the floor with the cleaner for at least 10 minutes before rinsing.

Home Maintenance: Gutter Cleaning Tips

Wednesday, October 7th, 2015

home-maintenance-guttersCleaning Your Gutters in the Fall

Why is it Important to Regularly Check and Clean Gutters?

  •     Clean gutters help to keep your home looking nice.
  •     Gutters are a defense system that keeps water from entering your home causing damage.
  •     They also keep water away from the exterior of the home and the foundation so no water damage or rotting occurs.
  •     Debris and trapped water in gutters can lead to loose and overflowing gutters that won’t be able to function and protect properly.
  •     Gutters clogged with debris attract pests like mosquitoes, rodents, and ants that will build homes in your gutters or even end up in your home.
  •     Areas with cooler temperatures can experience gutters blocked with ice. These ice dams force water into your home and can become too heavy with ice that the gutters become unattached from your home or may collapse and fall on the home, creating unexpected damage.
  •     Gutters filled with debris keep the water from evaporating as it gets trapped beneath the debris. This can cause mold and mildew to grow, which is very hard to remove and can easily spread to larger areas.

Vertical Gardening Tips

How to Garden in a Vertical Space

Vertical space is often underused but it has great potential in small gardens. From herbs to vegetables, vertical gardens are an increasingly popular way to go green and grow your own produce, and that’s the value of growing up.

Here are a few ideas to get your garden pots growing. Attaching pots of herbs or various vegetables to sturdy wire mesh or trellis can turn a bare sunny wall into a lush garden.

Climbing beans and squash can also be planted in large containers at the base of the wall and are easy to train up the mesh for a beautiful display.

To start building your garden attach wood batons to the wall and secure a sturdy wire mesh to them. Drill holes in the sides of plastic pots and window boxes and thread galvanized wire through them before planting.

After the risk of frost has passed fill the pots with a lightweight potting mix, plant with hardened off plants, secure parts to the mesh and arranged larger ones at the base of the wall.

Leave space for plants to develop and train climbing crops up the mesh. Water the plants frequently because they’re going to dry out rapidly in their exposed position.

Tie in climbing plants as they grow and harvest frequently to encourage further crops.

Canning Your Own Fruits and Vegetables

Canning Tips by True Value Hardware

Canning is a great way to safely preserve surplus fruits and vegetables.

Here’s what you’ll need: A pressure canner, your choice of fresh fruits and vegetables, tongs, mason jars for canning and a recipe.

Start by washing your jars with soap and hot water, and be sure to check for cracks.

home-canning-jarsFill the jars with your clean, cut up fruits and vegetables. Pour in brine or preservatives, where applicable, leaving an inch of space at the top.

Gently shake the jar to get rid of air bubbles.

Screw on the lids without over tightening so that air can escape and create the necessary seal.

Using the tongs place your jars into the pan submerging them about halfway into the hot water.

Following instructions close the lid and turn up the heat to it’s highest position.

Allow steam to vent for approximately ten minutes. Then, seal it completely and allow the pressure to build inside.

After about 20 minutes turn off the heat and let the canner cool down.

Once the pressure is down to zero let out the steam and carefully remove the lid.

How to Get Rid of Ants

Get Rid of Ants in Your Home

Control ants in your home with these tips

Two basic things will help keep your home rid of ants: Sealing up the ways they get in and eliminating their reasons for wanting to be there in the first place.

There are a number of commercial ant baits, killers and sprays at your local True Value to keep ants from encroaching on your kitchen and home. Some kill on contact but many of these are formulated so the ants carry the poison back to the colony themselves.

Ask your local Hardwareian which ant treatment is right for you.

Keeping your home clean and clear of crumbs and delicious particles for ants to steal is a great preventative measure against ants. Sealing food in airtight dishes seals in the smell and also the freshness for you. Same goes for pet food. In a tightly shut bin ants can’t smell it and Fido is less likely to open it himself.

Use clear silicone caulk on cracks in exterior walls windows and doors to create an ant proof seal. You may not be able to fill every crack but this will definitely deter invaders.

How to Save Energy with a Ceiling Fan

Wednesday, July 29th, 2015

Change Your Ceiling Fan Rotation to Save Home Energy

Did you know your ceiling fan can help you save on energy costs?

All you have to do is reverse the direction of the blades spin twice a year.

For winter you want them to turn clockwise. This will help the warm air that rises to circulate throughout the entire room.

In summer, counterclockwise will help keep the room cool.

Reversing the spin is easy. See this switch? Just turn it up or down, left or right, depending on the make and model of your fan.

Turn the fan back on low to make sure it’s spinning correctly and that’s it, a new spin on air circulation.
