home-painting-tipsHow to Paint a Room Quickly and Problem-Free

In most cases painting a room is a fairly simple task, even for the most inexperienced people. Depending on the size of the room, painting the whole room can take only a few hours, a full day, or even days on end.

However there are some techniques and methods you must learn before beginning to paint which will greatly speed up the process.

Furthermore, you will need to learn how to make the job as problem free as possible, and learn how to avoid any ‘painting disasters’.

To begin, let’s go through the tools and items you will need before you begin the paint job.

house-painterEssential Tools and Items For Painting

The most obvious tool you are going to need for a paint job, is a paint brush – of course. Paint brushes come in many different forms and sizes, but as in this case you are painting a room, a large paintbrush should do fine. Although having a smaller one for some of the corners and more precise parts of the wall would be beneficial.

The next most essential tool you will need is a paint roller. If you have never used or seen one of these before, it is a large roll with a handle which you dip into paint, and then roll across the wall back and forth. A paint roller makes painting one hundred times easier and quicker, and unless you want to spend ages painting the wall, you are going to need a paint roller. When you buy a paint roller you should also get a tray as well where you would pour some of the paint into.

How to Save Money on Home Heating

programmable-thermostatEight Ways to Save Money on Heating Bills

As temperatures drop, heating expenses begin to rise. Most American households rely on natural gas, electricity, or a combination of the two to keep warm in the winter, and it isn’t always easy to budget for the costs. These tips help to lower bills without sacrificing comfort.

Clean and Replace Filters

Forced-air systems rely on filters to clean and circulate the air. Clogged, dirty filters cause the system to work harder, resulting in higher energy bills and unnecessary wear on the unit. Most filters require monthly replacement, although some offer three months between changes.

Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

Consumer Reports recommends setting the temperature to 68 degrees Fahrenheit during waking hours and decreasing it to 60 degrees overnight. A programmable thermostat automatically takes care of these changes based on the user’s preset specifications. It also makes it easy and cost-efficient to schedule temperature changes to suit household activities, such as work or family vacations.

Take Advantage of Other Sources

Some routine tasks around the house, including cooking, drying clothes, and showering, generate warmth. Morning showers are great ways to boost overnight temperatures, and oven dinners allow homeowners to turn down thermostats early without losing significant amounts of heat.

solar-panels-energy-savingsWarm Up With Sunshine

When it is available, sunlight is an excellent home heating source. Homeowners who open their blinds and curtains during the day usually run their furnaces less often than those who keep their blinds closed. Covering windows as the sun goes down helps to retain the warmth into the evening.

Weatherproof Doors and Windows

As a house ages, tiny cracks and holes often create drafts that result in heat loss. It is not uncommon for a household to waste up to one-quarter of its energy through unseen air leaks. Weather strips minimize loss, and installation is fairly simple. Homeowners can also schedule professional tests to detect other leaks and losses.

cordless-drill-set-dewaltFeatures That Should Matter When Buying A Cordless Drill

Cordless drills offer convenience of using because you do not need to remain tied to an electric plug outlet to get the job done. You basically will enjoy freedom of movement when you choose a cordless drill and this will save you time and cost because you are able to carry out important drilling tasks even in areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.

These drills are now being manufactured with advanced features to add to their convenience and excellence, but they definitely come at higher prices compared to their corded counterparts. When getting the best cordless drill, it is important to consider your purpose of use so you are able to match all important features of the device to suit your needs. When buying a cordless drill, there are features that should matter so you get the most suitable for the job.

Work light – The flexibility that a cordless drill comes with means it should be able to function fully even in those hard to reach areas. Most therefore come with inbuilt LED work light to offer illumination in such situations. With the work light feature on your drill, you will have an easy time drilling in different conditions.

cordless-drill-lithium-batteryExtended battery life – Remember that cordless drills rely on batteries to function and you therefore should be on the lookout for a battery that you can trust to come through for you when you need it most. Most drills in the market use lithium ion batteries for easier reliable charging, impressive battery capacity and lighter weight on the machine. However, you still will find nickel cadmium and nickel metal hydride battery technologies on the drills. The two are not as expensive but then they are not as reliable as the lithium ion battery even though it is a little expensive. If you will be using your drill on an occasional basis, then the nickel cadmium battery technology may suffice, but for regular use, you definitely should go for lithium ion.

Do it Yourself Garage Door Repair

garage-door-repairQuick Garage Door Fixes for Do-It-Yourselfers

Some garage door issues should be left to professionals, but in many cases you may resolve the problem on your own.

Oil the moving parts

If the door is noisy or the rollers are sticky, try lubricating all the moving parts. You will need a can of silicone spray and a rag. Pay attention to the roller shaft and hinges first, then move to the torsion springs (you may have to slip a piece of cardboard behind them before you start). Grease the track.

Check for loose bolts and worn parts

Loose hardware results in all sorts of garage door problems, yet this issue can be resolved comparatively quickly and easily. Check for loose screws and bolts along the sides of the track. If you notice any, snug up all the nuts and bolts as needed. If you have a swing-up door, pay attention to the screws located at the plates where the spring is mounted.

If you have a roll-up garage door, scrutinize the hinges. Hinges issue often result in sagging at one side of the garage door. You may have to loosen the screws or replace the hinges. If you notice cracks in the wood at the hinges, try filling the cracks and the screw holes with wood filler. Take out the hinge before you start working and do not return it to its place until the filler is dry.

garage-door-remoteThe door won’t open

If you are stuck and do not have the time to fix the problem straight away, disconnect the door from the power using the cord hanging down from the motor (typically this cord has a red handle). Now you can operate the door manually. This method also works when the power is out.

If your garage door is not opening and you have the time to fix it, the first thing you need to do is to replace the battery inside the remote. Typically such batteries are alive for less than 12 month. If this does not help, try reprogramming the remote. You will find the instructions in the user manual or online.

Look at the safety sensors. Are they aligned? Can you see indicator lights (they should not be blinking)?

Also, check for the opener issues. If the motor is no more alive, you will have to buy a new one and replace it.

garage-door-fixesThe door is frozen

Frost can make the door freeze to the garage floor. If you hit the opener button, but the icy connection is still not broken, try to turn the ice into water with a heat gun, a hair dryer or ice melting products. You may also try working with something like a flat shovel, but in this case you need to be very careful so as not to damage the seal. Once you manage to open the door, remove any snow and ice, wipe the water.

How to Paint a Chevron Design on a Wall

Adding a decorative chevron design to your wall is easy with this guide.

Painting is one of the most common ways of adding personality to any wall. But sometimes it’s fun to take the next step by incorporating simple designs and patterns to add a whole new dimension to any room, and that’s the value of painting outside the lines.

Today I’m going to show you how to create a simple chevron pattern. Here’s what you’ll need two colors of paint, a roller, a yardstick and ruler, a pencil, painters tape, utility knife, a brush and a level.

how-to-paint-wall-designOnce you have your supplies you’re ready to start. Begin by painting the wall with a base color and let it dry. Then use a yardstick to determine the width and length for your chevron stripes.

I’m creating two 10-inch lines with a 3 inch gap. Next decide where you want the Chevron’s peek at the top of the wall and mark this as point A my point is 24 inches from the edge of the wall.

Measure down the width of the stripe with a ruler and mark point B using the level to ensure the marks are vertically aligned. Measure the length of the stripe from point B to the edge of the wall and mark point C.

How to Seal Your Driveway

Tips for repairing your driveway by True Value Hardware

Not only is repairing your driveway easy to do, it will last longer and look better.

Here’s what you’ll need: water-based acrylic filler/sealer, a chisel, a caulking gun, asphalt sealant, a brush applicator with squeegee, crack filler, foam backer rods if necessary, cold patch blacktop, knee pads, gloves and safety goggles.

Start by chiseling along the cracks. Do this at an angle so they’re wider underneath than they are on the surface.

Then clean the driveway with a garden hose, a bit of laundry detergent, and a scrub brush, removing all weeds, grass, and other debris. Make sure it’s completely dry before continuing with your repairs.

Fill cracks with the acrylic filler and a caulking gun. For wider cracks, fill with foam backer rods before applying. Smooth away excess with a putty knife.

For larger potholes, you’ll need to shovel packaged cold-patch blacktop into the well-cleaned hole, until it is slightly overfilled. Then place a piece of scrap plywood over the patch and drive your car back and forth across it to further compact it.

Let patches cure for at least one day. Mist the driveway with water, then spread the sealant with the squeegee, several square feet at a time. Allow the first coat to dry between 4 to 12 hours before applying the second.

Keep off the driveway until it is completely dry — at least 24 to 36 hours.

Tips for Fertilizing Your Lawn

Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

fertilizer-grass-lawnHow to Fertilize Your Lawn

Adding fertilizer to your lawn enriches the soil and creates a hardier, more beautiful grass by replacing lost nutrients, healing damage from pests, pets and foot traffic and by promoting new growth.

The most common types are dry, granular fertilizer and liquid. Granular, the most commonly used, is often slow-releasing and can provide nutrients for up to six months. Liquid fertilizers usually are quickly absorbed into the soil and easy to use with a garden hose sprayer.

Both types come in organic and synthetic formulations. But, synthetic fertilizers usually don’t work as long as organic ones but do often work quicker.

A balanced lawn fertilizer contains equal proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This is indicated by the nutrient ratios on the package. For example: 10-10-10. This particular ratio indicates that it is a good, general-purpose lawn fertilizer formula. Some types of grass in particular regions may require different formulations.

Ask a Hardwarian at Martens True Value hardware store in Reedsburg if you’re not sure which to use.

broadcast-lawn-spreaderNitrogen helps grass stay green and thickly growing and is the most important of the nutrients to help grass grow well. Phosphorus and Potassium keep grass roots healthy.

Read fertilizer labels for proper application times, amounts and conditions. Apply as directed on the package.

Fertilize your lawn at the very least once a year. Ideally, you should fertilize twice—once in the fall, at the end of the growing season and once in the spring before growing season.

To apply granular fertilizer, use a broadcast spreader. This particular type of spreader covers the most area evenly and quickly. Pour the recommended amount of fertilizer into the spreader hopper.

Apply the fertilizer in the same way you would mow. Work your way across the lawn, turning at each end and directing the spreader alongside the row you just completed so that coverage almost overlaps. Keep a slow, steady pace.

The ideal period for tree trimming is spring until early summer but the time frame can differ according to the species. It is also important that you are using the correct tools.
